Veronica: Is THIS the most TERRIFYING moment in the film? Our Top 3 scares

Young girls in basement? Check. Ouija board? Check. Demonic presence? Check.

Terrifued viewers hiding behind cushions and desperately reaching for the remote? Chech, check, check.

Netflix had scored another huge pop culture hit with its imported Spanish screamer, with hysterical social media posts claiming they can’t even watch it to the end.

The supernatural chiller is packed with classic jumps, bumps and scares but one stands out as an absolute classic. Brace yourselves and keep that remote handy…

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS

Veronica follows the typical horror trope of the titular character deciding to hold a seance for her dead father while an eclipse is going on outside.

Naturally, she does it in the totally creepy abandoned basement of her school. Naturally, something far worse than dear departed daddy comes knocking and all hell breaks loose.

In third place of honour is the nun.

The brides of Christ often feature in horror movie set-up but this one really goes for the killer chills with white, milky blind eyes and the cosy nickname Sister Death. The fact that she’s actually one of the good guys and is utterly terrifying shows just how horrifying the movie is.

Second place goes to the pant-wetting moment when poor Veronica is starting to descend into madness and sees a demon walking down the hallway at home.

Real or imagined, it will make you leave all the lights on at night and listen for strange creaks.

First place goes to an excellent hommage to one of the all-time classic horror movie moments. You knows it’s coming, you’ve seen it hundreds of times before and it still gets you every time.

Fittingly, what happens on screen is exactly what happens on your sofa as the movie goes in for the kill.

The horror movie scream is a cinema staple. Often accompanying a frantic flight through the woods, basement, dark alley, creepy castle and so on, its is the soundtrack to our fear.

The more refined version has crept into modern horror movies and was last seen in IT, demonstrated by Pennywise and his needle sharp teeth.

This is the moment the camero zooms suddenly and a creature or possesses character open the jaw and it becomes an unnaturally extended gaping maw, as a skin-curdling scream erupts.

This happens in Veronica as the seance goes wrong and the young schoolgirl is possessed by an evil spirit. She screams, you scream, we all scream. Job done.
