Vegetable giants are heavyweight champs of the growing world

And the pensioner of Newport, South Wales, topped with a 42lb beetroot and a 9lb carrot at Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in North Yorkshire.

He insists there are no secrets to his success apart from patience and a little bit of cash.

He said: “It’s just about having the right seed and the right growing conditions and you have to put in plenty of time.

“You do need a little bit of money for compost and fertiliser, but that’s it.”

Civil servant Kevin Fortey, 39, weighed in with an 11st top marrow which at 4.5ft was the same height as his son Jamie,12.

The vegetable had lovingly been wrapped in a duvet each night by Kevin as part of a 36-hour weekly gardening regime at his home in Cwmbran, South Wales.

He said: “These vegetables are like another part of my family, only they don’t answer back.

“My marrows are nurtured and taken care of, that’s our secret.

“We cover them in blankets and when it gets really cold they get tucked in with nice duvets to keep them warm.”

Meanwhile twins Stuart and Ian Paton, 57 who spend four hours each day tending to their pumpkins are hoping to smash their record for growing the largest one in the world.

The brothers, from Lymington, Hants, want to beat last year’s weight of 162st.

Libby Mackenzie, three, sits on the latest offering.

Ian said: “This pumpkin should absolutely smash our previous record. We have only been growing it for 96 days and it definitely weighs well over 125st.”
