Sherlock: Benedict Cumberbatch hints at new female lead to follow Doctor Who

However, the 41-year-old actor may not return in the lead role and has teased that there may be plans for a new female lead.

The news comes after Jodie Whittaker was named as the first-ever female Time Lord for the next series of Doctor Who.

Remaining coy about a possible future series, Benedict said that he “may” have spoken to the writers about it.

Speaking to Radio Times, he also grinned and said he “maybe” interested in returning to play Sherlock once again.

He previously told the BBC at the time of Jodie’s announcement: “It’s an alien – why can’t it be a woman? Why can’t it be any gender?

“I think she’s an extraordinary actress and we’re lucky culturally to have got her to agree to do it. Just go for it – let’s see what happens.”

On the topic of a female Sherlock he added: “Why not? I don’t care. Sherlockina – it’s coming to you soon.”

It comes as Sian Brooke, who played Eurus Holmes in season four, teased on ITV’s Lorraine that season five could be in the mix.

She told the 57-year-old host: “I would say it might come back. And I would love to be a part of that!

“The show is such a gem of a series. It is a real page-turner. When I used to get the script come through, it would be like a little present!”

Eurus was revealed to be Sherlock’s sister after being made to keep the revelation a secret for months.

The 36-year-old admitted: “It was so hard not to tell anyone. Before I got the job, I had to audition to play several different characters.

“At first, I thought they just couldn’t make their minds up about what they wanted me to do. I had no idea I would be playing Sherlock’s sister until I actually got the part.

“Working with Benedict was so much fun. I’ve watched the show from the very beginning and was a huge fan. When I was offered the chance to appear in it, that blew me away.”
