Ruby (played by Liv Hill) found out that she was pregnant at the start of the episode and taken to have an abortion as she was not able to look after the child.
The foetus of her unborn baby could be seen being packaged and placed into a freezer as evidence – but the police chose not to use it to investigate grooming in Rochdale.
When Greater Manchester Police chose to reopen the investigation, Ruby was told that her unborn baby had been frozen.
She could be seen lying on a sofa with her mother Lorna (Lisa Riley) as she asked what her child looked like and why it had been kept by the police.
Many of those watching at home took to Twitter to express their disgust that the baby had been held as evidence but ignored by local authorities, while others revealed their upset.
One viewer commented: “Ruby is breaking my heart #Threegirls,” while another commented: “#ThreeGirls absolutely heartbreaking what has happened to these girls, makes me so angry the more I watch it. The police should be ashamed.”
A third tweeted: “How did they get a match off the foetus and not proceed to prosecute? #threegirls.”
“Seriously how do you take an actual foetus and get a DNA match and move forward with a prosecution,” someone else demanded to know.
Another was shocked that the police had chosen to store the unborn baby in a freezer, commenting: “They’re keeping the foetus for evidence? Damn! #threegirls.”
Tonight’s instalment saw Holly (Molly Windsor), Ruby and Amber (Ria Zmitrowicz) open up to the police about the abuse they suffered.
The final episode will see them go to court to give evidence against the nine men who groomed them and relive the atrocities they suffered once more.
Three Girls concludes Thursday on BBC One at 9pm.
