The afterlife is an ever-changing, surreal place in This Strange Realm of Mine. One minute, you’re shooting monsters creeping up on you in dungeon caverns. The next, you’re in brilliant fields of shimmering white snow, contemplating your memories. Touted as a feelgood horror experience, it looks to offer a different kind of fear.
Players act as a newly-dead character, one who must explore an afterlife that will keep taking players to different locales. Filthy streets, dank dungeons, glowing space stations, abandoned asylums, and other locations will hammer at the player with hidden meanings, as will other visions of more pleasant places and memories lost. This dizzying array of places will take the player through a winding story, hinting at horrors, but also of more joyful things the character is beginning to recall.
Monsters lurk in these places, though, and players will have to deal with them using machine guns, pistols, and shotguns, old FPS-style. Keeping these creatures at bay will be important to keeping yourself alive, but you’ll only truly be living should you make some connections with the game’s many NPCs. Each has a story to offer and may need your help, and some may unveil pieces of the player’s dead character through those interactions.
This Strange Realm of Mine seeks to give players solid shooter action, some moments of creeping dread, and a pleasant look back at a lifetime.
This Strange Realm of Mine is available now for $ 14.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Doomster Entertainment, you can head to the developer’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
