The 49-year-old actress spilled the beans recently that the latest season of the science-fiction detective drama is her last in the career-making role, leaving fans everywhere devastated at her decision.
Now the star has softened the blow by hinting at what viewers can expect from her final performance.
Speaking to TV Times, Gillian revealed: “This is it. This was always going to be the end for me. I think it’s time. We’ve delivered 10 strong episodes this season and I feel like it’s ending on a high.
“I won’t change my mind. It’s been an extraordinary journey with an extraordinary character, but there’s a lot more that I want to do.”
The Fall actress went on to share that not only will this season feature a particularly funny instalment, but it will also finally see the introduction of Scully’s son William.
“From the very beginning, we’ve had episodes that are comedic, so that’s something that the fans do expect and look forward to,” she said. “We’ve definitely got one of those this season and it’s funny.”
She continued: “Yes, William does show up. I’m very excited about that. It was really nice to meet the actor who plays William and to have a face to our child that we talk a lot about.
“It’s great that he’s part of the story this season.”
The season picks up where viewers left off last season with Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) struggling to fight off death after contracting a terrifying alien virus.
Given there is an entire 10 episodes to come, it seems likely that the believer of the pair will live to fight another day solving the world’s mysteries.
The drama will also see producers exploring the back story of Cigarette Smoking Man (William B Davis), a sinister character who has had an involvement in some of the world’s biggest historical events, including the Moon landing.
Gillian also revealed that she hasn’t fully appreciated the relationship between Mulder and Scully until recently, saying: “I recently watched some of the much older episodes that I hadn’t seen for a couple of decades and I was really struck by how unique the relationship between Mulder and Scully was and is.
“How they relate to each other and the level of humour and repartee.”
