The Walking Dead season 9 spoilers: Secrets behind Negan and Rick Grimes's chat REVEALED

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Walking Dead season nine, episode two.

Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) returned to the The Walking Dead in episode two, titled The Bridge and shared a brief conversation with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

Although the segment was but a few minutes, their dialogue stole the show, as the rivals exchanged heated words.

Commenting on Rick’s work on the Bridge, Negan smirked: “I hope you come tell me when it all goes to s***, and it will.”

The chat summed up Negan’s views on Rick, however, their conversation was never meant to take place revealed showrunner, Angela Kang.

According to the comic books, Negan was suppose to speak to Carl (Chandler Riggs) at the cell, but since he is no longer apart of the show the responsibility fell on his father Rick.

Showrunner Angela said it was interesting for the writers to have Rick visit Negan instead of having Carl talk to him in the cell like the comics described.

Speaking about the similarities between Rick and Negan, Angela said: “What they have in common is that in some ways there are times when they feel like dinosaurs after the war.

“For Rick, he’s a man who thrives on a mission and in some ways, the end of the war left him without a mission other than to try to make Carl’s dream of civilisation come true.”

She told Entertainment Weekly: “[Rick] knows that they’ve got to help the Sanctuary. He knows that Alexandria’s gotta be built up.

“But all that stuff is going and so we see that he has latched onto this idea of rebuilding the Bridge.”

Revealing the truth behind Rick’s visit to see Negan, Angela described the encounter as an opportunity for Rick to “gloat a little”.

She added: “Maybe he also needs that reminder of what’s driving him, that reminder that Negan is down there as the symbol of how they can be a civilised society.

“He almost has to justify to himself that the pain  he caused to Maggie and some of the other people in the aftermath of the war, was worth it because here’s Negan, and they’re doing all the things that they said that they would do.”

Also, in episode two Aaron (Ross Marquand) had his arm amputated after an entire log was dropped on his limb when a herd of walkers ambushed workers on the Bridge.

The builder was in the middle of collecting wood when walkers crashed into a group of workers, as a result Jed (Rhys Coiro) dropped the large log on Aaron’s arm.

Later, Enid (Katelyn Nacon) had no choice but to amputate the painfully looking body part to save Aaron’s life.

The move saddened viewers, with one taking to Twitter to comment on the harrowing scenes, saying: “That crushed arm from the log though. Damn, Walking Dead.”

Another tweeted: “Episode two of The Walking Dead has been really good so far. However, I feel bad for Aaron right now.”

A third wrote: “The Walking Dead is going to give me a heart attack,” while another added: “The Walking Dead has me on the edge of my seat.”

The Walking Dead season nine continues next Sunday on AMC and tonight at 9pm on FOX in the UK. Seasons 1-8 are available to stream on NOW TV.
