Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) was devastated when his son was bitten by a walker earlier in the season.
Now, The Walking Dead showrunner has hinted that the leader of the Alexandrians could be next as the show continues to evolve.
Carl’s (Chandler Riggs) death was not expected as the series continues to stay fresh and keep fans on their toes.
Looking towards season nine of the popular zombie series, Greg Nicotero said that he has “no idea” what the future holds for Rick but it’s not unlikely that he could be killed off.
Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, he teased: “Listen, you know, the show like we said, the show changes and the show evolves.
“The DNA of it is that story of survival and the story of the achievements and hardships people endure.”
He quickly added: “I have no idea. I wish I did.”
When asked if the series will deviate from the graphic novels it is based on even more, Rosita star Christian Serratos commented: “It’s just about a balance.
“It’s a balance of staying honest to the comic book, which is the reason The Walking Dead was able to make it to TV and a balance of keeping people in their toes.
“I always think that if and when the TV show deviates from the comic books, it’s always to better the story not always to change the story.”
Greg added: “If we just did a panel for panel of the comic book it wouldn’t be very exciting because then everyone could say we’re up to this bit.
“So part of it is deviating from the graphic novel to serve our story and yeah, I think it’s safe to say that we embrace those detours and ultimately there are key moments that we want to pay tribute to and a lot of times they get reworked to fit our format.
“It’s important to keep it fresh and keep people engaged.”
“[Carl’s death] throws a hand grenade into the show,” he explained.
“You can predict certain things from the comic books and certain things have happened and played out. But it really does change everything up. For everyone.”
He continued: “If Carl dies, then anyone fair game. We all definitely thought he was never going to die.”
The Walking Dead season 8 continues Monday on FOX UK at 9pm.
