The Walking Dead season 10 spoilers: Rick Grimes replacement revealed in new images?

The Walking Dead is just a few months away from returning to TV screens with its tenth season.

Season ten is certainly going to cause some waves in The Walking Dead universe, as it will see a number of changes taking place.

Most notably, Michonne (played by Danai Gurira) will be stepping down from the show, as announced at The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic Con last month.

The show will, however, also be adding a number of new characters.

At the panel it was announced brand new character Virgil will be joining the show, played by Kevin Carroll.

In the brand new images of Virgil viewers can see the survivor standing on a beach next to a tree, which is holding a lamp.

Although it doesn’t look like Virgil has had the best experience in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, he has survived this long, so he must have a set of skills readily available.

Another image sees him gloomily looking down inside a house – but his demeanour is not explained any further.

AMC have revealed Virgil is “a highly intelligent and resourceful man who is desperately trying to get home to his family.”

This eerily sounds exactly like Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) back in season one.

Most of The Walking Dead’s first season followed Rick looking for his wife, Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies), and his son, Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs).

Rick’s journey in season one saw him running against all odds to save his family from the oncoming onslaught of the undead, and Virgil could be eager to do the same.

Recently viewers of the show were wondering whether Rick will make a return to the main show.

And Scott Gimple, The Walking Dead’s Showrunner, told Digital Spy at SDCC that it is “certainly possible”.

He went on: “Right now, we’re trying to get that on its narrative feet before any crossovers happen… but it’s certainly possible deep in the future.”

“There’s some interesting aspects of when that [new show] occurs, as well. We have different things happening at different times in The Walking Dead world.

“At one point, we might all catch up with each other, but [right now] we’re telling different sides of the story.”

If Rick were to return just as Michonne leaves, viewers would certainly not be very happy.

Alternatively, could Rick be on his way back to help Michonne escape the horrific wastelands of Atlanta?

The Walking Dead season 10 begins Sunday 6 October at 9pm on AMC, and Monday 7 October at 9pm on FOX UK.
