The Voice UK: Michelle John recalls domestic violence past 'You're so broken'

The 43-year-old revealed she was in an abusive relationship and hopes that her performance on the series inspires others.

Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, she said that viewers have contacted her about her experience.

“I’ve had some really lovely messages from viewers and people on social media and basically saying they felt they it was very brave to be honest about my past,” she said.

“Some people were inspired by my attitude, some were inspired by my bravery after sharing what I’ve been through and also having the courage to do a show like The Voice.”

Michelle went on to add that it was important to her that she inspired others to open up about their own experiences as she recalled her own.

“It took me a long time to be able to heal from that and to even be open about it to my friends and my family as well,” she commented.

“I refuse to be a victim, I refuse to let that break me and I’m going to pick myself up and be brave and try and to say to anyone who is there right now, there is life after that.

“You just feel so broken and so damaged but there is healing after that and you can go on, and fulfil your dreams.”

Michelle revealed that she has not spoken to her mentor will.i.am about her past but said he acknowledges that there is a lot of pain in her voice when she sings.

“We’ve not really had that conversation,” she noted. “We have kept it around the music but he has acknowledged that when I sing there is a lot of passion.

“There is pain that comes out in my voice, there is joy and there is strength and he sees that when I sing.”

The singer also confessed that if will.i.am had not chosen her to be on his team, she’d have liked to have worked with Jennifer Hudson.

“I would have loved to have worked with Jennifer because obviously, she’s got a big voice, I’ve got a big voice and we’ve both come from a gospel background,” Michelle explained.

“She’s really passionate when she sings, so I think I could learn a lot from her. She was the other person I would have loved to have worked with.”

UK airs tonight on ITV at 8.30pm.
