The Voice UK final 2018: Tom Jones reveals royal secret ahead of Queen’s birthday

Queen Elizabeth II will be turning 92 on April 21, and 77-year-old Tom is preparing to take any request that comes his way from the monarch.

Tom is full of life after his hip operation last year, and will pick up his postponed tour right after The Voice UK 2018 final.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Tom said: “I go to America in May for my tour. Because I had my hip done, you know I’ve got a new hip. Maybe more dancing! I should have gone to the stage last September but I postponed the shows.

“So now I’m going to pick them up in May. Then I come back and do a European tour, so I’ll be working.

“The Queen’s birthday is very important. I’m going to do that on the 21st. I don’t know what I’m going to sing yet to be quite honest with you.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do yet. I’ve got to find out. If there’s anything she would like, I’ll do it!”

Having performed for royalty before, Tom revealed that he has not been asked to sing or attend the upcoming royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

He continued: “Royal wedding? No, unless it’s in the post. I don’t know. I don’t think so. But to sing for the Queen is a wonderful thing.”

Tom’s act Ruti Olajugbagbe will go head-to-head against contestants Belle Voci, Donel Mangena and Lauren Bannon on this weekend’s show.

He said: “Ruti’s going to sing a big song and then we’re going to do a duet together. It’s a beautiful song. What a wonderful world. I think it fits because everybody can relate to it.

“It’s not like a love song or an up-tempo song. Other people are doing those big up-tempo things. This is a tender moment. I was looking for something tender because she has a beautiful, warm voice. I think this is the right song. I hope it is.

“It feels right when we rehearse it. I’m going to help her as much as I can and do whatever I can.”

Having discussed his time with Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra on the show, Tom discussed what it was like to work with fresh talent.

Tom gleamed: “Tremendous! See, it doesn’t change. Especially when you do a duet. I’m as concerned, I’m sure, as Ruti is, still, after I’ve done all these duets with all these people – Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner… I’ve sang with loads of people.

“But you want it to be good. If you want it to be good, then you want it to be right. It’s not easy. It’s not like, ‘Yeah, I’ve done this a million times, I can do this’. Oh no, it’s a different thing.”

Tom then revealed his huge secret to still performing on stage aged 77.

He explained: “First of all, health. You’ve got to have good health and that your voice stays intact. Thank god my voice is still working. The love of it though, you’ve got to love it. If you don’t love it then you’re in the wrong business.

“It’s very emotional when you go on stage. You pour your emotions out to the people. If you’re not prepared to do that, then you’re in trouble. You’ve got to love to do that. I feel the same now as I did when I started. Even more so because I think, ‘Wow, I’m still here and I’m still loving it and I’m still doing it’.

“It never stops being interesting as long as you want to do it and you have the equipment to do it with. Ruti does and she’s a beautiful girl and has a beautiful voice. So as long as the desire stays with her to do it, she can last for as long as she lives!”

Tom revealed that he wants to return to the show next year, smiling: “Yeah, I want to come back because I really enjoy doing it. I have a ball doing it. I think the highlight is singing off-the-cuff with Jennifer, because it worked.

“Sometimes when you try something it doesn’t always work, but it did. So that was really good. We got a great response from it. Finding Ruti, she’s come this far now to the final – that’s about as exciting as it gets with me.”

Ruti also gushed that is has been a brilliant experience to work with Tom Jones on the show.

The contestant explained that Tom has been full of advice, saying: “Stay true to who I am and don’t let anyone change me and just continue to do what I want to do because if I don’t like what I’m doing, then what’s the point?

“It’s been amazing. He’s just got so much experience. He’s a legend really. Being able to work with him has just been an amazing opportunity.”

The Voice UK 2018 concludes tonight on ITV at 8.30pm.
