‘The Shape of Water’ and ‘Dunkirk’ Take Top Honors at ADG and ACE Awards

ADG and ACE Awards

As we lurch into the final weeks before the Oscars, a few more awards groups have given out their top prizes. Ceremonies like the Art Directors Guild’s Awards and the American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Awards offer some much-deserved accolades to films and artists that often escape the spotlight at the Academy Awards…and they also offer a way for us to narrow down our Oscars betting pools.

Here’s who won big at the ADG Awards and ACE Eddie Awards this weekend.

The Shape of Water and Blade Runner 2049 won the top prizes for film at the ADG Awards on Sunday night, which awards honors for production design. This pushes The Shape of Water to the front of the Oscar race once again. Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War-era fairy tale earned 13 Oscar nominations and continues to look like the movie to beat. It was a great night at the ADG Awards for genre films overall, with Blade Runner 2049 and Logan scoring the top prizes in their respective categories. Logan even beat out awards favorite Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri for best production design in a contemporary film. Unsurprisingly, Coco won the slot for animated film.

At the ACE Eddie Awards on Saturday night, Dunkirk was the big winner, scooping up the top prize for a drama film. Lee Smith’s masterful editing of Christopher Nolan’s war epic continues to look like the Oscar frontrunner. Other major film prizes went to Tatiana S. Riegel of I, Tonya and Steve Bloom of Pixar’s Coco.
