The Replacement: Neve McIntosh warns maternity drama is ‘dark, twisty and full of secrets’

has been at the company for a number of years and has just secured a big project for the firm when she unexpectedly falls pregnant.

She is then tasked with finding someone to cover her role while she goes on maternity leave.

At first, Paula Reece (Vicky McClure) seems like the perfect choice but over the course of the series Ellen becomes increasingly suspicious that she is being ousted from the company putting her friendship with boss Kay Gillies and partner Ian (Richard Rankin) at risk.

Ahead of The Replacement’s debut on the BBC tonight, Neve McIntosh, who plays Ellen’s best friend Kay has promised viewers are in for a treat.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the actress teased that the series “gets very dark, quite twisty and there’s lots of secrets”.

“It keeps you guessing,” she insisted. “Is Ellen just a bit crazy or is there some truth to what’s she saying? There’s some really great stuff between Vicky and Morven.

“It follows Ellen’s character as she takes on this detective role because she’s so focussed on the idea that this woman is up to something and she’s got something to hide.

“It just goes down a really nice dark path and becomes this battle between two strong and slightly cracked women.”

Kay and Ellen have been best friends and working together for several years, but the architect’s unexpected pregnancy puts a strain on their relationship.

Explaining how Kay deals with the arguing between Ellen and Paula, Neve said: “She wants everything to run smoothly and doesn’t understand where this friction has come from.

“She thinks it’s just Ellen and her hormones and she’s making it all up in her head. She doesn’t deal with it well at all.”

And what can fans expect from Neve’s character Kay? “She’s a little bit trippy and a bit funny,” she commented, adding: “She’s very light and it’s not a role that I get a lot of chances to play and it was lovely to be doing something in Scotland.”

The Replacement airs on One tonight at 9pm.
