The Nightly Show ends with dismal ratings as Dermot O'Leary teases second series

Having launched in February with just under three million viewers, the end of the series aired last night won just 6 per cent of the available audience.

Dermot O’Leary interviewed Fawlty Towers actor John Cleese during his second week of hosting, having also welcomed stars such as Eamonn Holmes, Kym Marsh and Dennis Quaid.

The X Factor presenter, 43, previously fronted the show in its fourth week last month, although one episode was cancelled due to the attack in Westminster.

The Nightly Show has been panned by critics and viewers alike since its start, with many calling for ITV News at Ten to be reinstated to its original slot.

However, guest hosts Gordon Ramsay and Bradley Walsh, who appeared in week five and six respectively, proved more popular with audiences.

Other celebrities taking the helm included David Walliams, John Bishop, Davina McCall and Jason Manford.

Beloved TV duo Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, who were also tipped to appear, reportedly pulled out after the opening week was slated.

ITV later said the pair had only been in talks to present and it was their hectic schedule that had prevented them from signing up.

The broadcaster planned for the programme to run temporarily for eight weeks in a trial run, with no news on whether a second series will be commissioned.

But O’Leary concluded last night’s instalment with the comment “we’ll see you soon”, hinting it could be back again.
