In 2009, Karen was jailed for eight years for the fake abduction of her daughter Shannon, who had been hidden and drugged in the flat of her boyfriend’s uncle, Michael Donovan.
While tonight’s conclusion of the controversial two-part drama suggested that Karen couldn’t have instigated the traumatic events, BBC viewers began to “feel sorry” for the mother-of-seven.
“She’s told lies and she’s let people down, but I will not join in the lynch mob,” Julie protested in court. “I’ve stood by her before and I’ll stand by her now. She’s still my friend.”
And many viewers agreed, admitting The Moorside flipped their opinion on the troubled Karen.
“Gotta say actress playing Karen Matthews, Gemma Whelan did great job. I felt sorry for her at the end,” enthused one viewer, as another agreed: “Love that it ended on the conclusion that Karen was not an evil person, like the media portrayed her, but a damaged person.”
One more wrote: “I honestly think Moorside tried to make us look at Karen differently and not in a bad way. Incredibly well done.”
“Found #TheMoorside unbelievably sad. Brilliantly acted #SheridanSmith. Of course what Karen did was wrong but she was damaged,” cried a fourth.
Though, others stood by their initial thoughts that Karen was a “monster”.
