Feeling isolated by her new husband (played by Alex Hassell) and his sister Marin (Romola Garai), she found solace in the empty house with her parakeet Peebo.
Unfortunately for Nella (Anya Taylor-Joy), her beloved pet escaped from the large, empty house by the canal and his fate is currently unknown.
As fans wait to find out what happened to Peebo in the second and final instalment, which airs tonight, the cast have a revealed a behind-the-scenes secret about Nella and the bird.
“It’s actually a parrot,” Alex, who stars as Johannes, told press including Express.co.uk. “But for all intents and purposes, it’s a parakeet.
“So basically that’s Polly and she was a complete star and clucked at all the right moments and in fact off-screen she would say various forms of hello and would burp and do lots of hilarious things.”
His co-star Romola joked: “She was a real professional. She definitely saw this as her big break. She took it very seriously.”
It comes after the actress revealed that Mr Scraps, who starred as Johannes’ dog Rezeki, was “hopeless” on set.
“Mr Scraps was the most wonderful dog and absolutely lovely, we were all mad about him, but he was completely hopeless,” she explained.
“Sometimes we were halfway through a scene and he’d forget and just wander away.”
Last night, viewers of the BBC period drama were left heartbroken when Rezeki was killed by Johannes’ scorned lover Jacques.
The Miniaturist continues tonight on BBC One at 9pm.
