The Long Song’s second episode continued on BBC One this evening and viewers tuned in to watch July’s (played by Tamara Lawrence) story unfold.
The BBC drama is set in Jamaica during the last days of slavery and tells the story of July’s life on a sugar plantation on the island.
This evening saw Robert Goodwin’s (Jack Lowden) introduction to the story, and he started a dangerous relationship with July,
But for the two of them to be together, he had to come up with a plan that didn’t please the viewers.
Robert agreed to marry Caroline Mortimer (Hayley Atwell) whilst have a secret relationship with July.
Fans took to Twitter to comment on the plan, and they weren’t very positive.
“Oh no. This is awful,” wrote one viewer.
Another commented: “Erm what type of plan is this?”
“Why’s he playing Miss July like that?” asked another.
A third said: “This is NOT a good plan pal.”
“Is the marriage part of the plan to free Miss July?” said another.
One more viewer tweeter: “What?”
“That is not a good plan. It is a cruel plan,” added another.
Meanwhile, The Long Song star, Sir Lenny Henry, revealed how he was cast for the role of Godfrey.
Speaking about being cast in the role, he told press, including Express.co.uk:“Andrea’s a friend and colleague, and I’d had meetings with her about something else we were working on, and as we were working – I’d already read The Long Song, because I’m a fan of Andrea’s work – and she kept saying, ‘You should read The Long Song, you know.’
“I said, ‘I’ve read it already’.
The comedian then started to speak as Andrea, continuing: “‘No, you should read again’. ‘Really?’”
“‘Yeah’,” Sir Lenny then coughed, whilst saying “Godfrey,” to indicate Andrea was trying to convince him to take the part.
“And she kept going on about it, and then I read it again, and I thought, ‘This is great’,” Sir Lenny continued.
“Then I found out that this was happening, and it was an ensemble piece, and I wanted to do that.”
The Long Song airs tonight on BBC One at 9pm.
