The Handmaid’s Tale season two: Will Alexis Bledel return as Ofglen in the next season?

Ofglen, played by Alexis Bledel, instantly emerged as one of the most compelling characters on the nightmarish first series broadcast on

Hulu has now confirmed that Bledel will return as Ofglen for the second series of the television adaption of the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood.

The former Gilmore Girl only appeared in a recurring role in the first series but will be a series regular in the second season.

In the first series, the fundamentalist Christian Republic of Gilead branded the rebel Handmaid Ofglen as a “gender traitor”.

Ofglen was forced to witness the hanging of her female lover before being subjected to brutal government-ordered female genital mutilation.

She narrowly escapes death due to her fertile status. The show hinted that there is more to her story by playing Jay Reatard’s Waiting for Something over the closing credits.

The song goes: “It’s not complete. I must compete. Stand on my feet. Live with these creeps. I’m sitting and waiting for something to happen. Oh no no no! They won’t get me.”

The lyrics reassured viewers that Ofglen will be back to sow the seeds of rebellion as part of the covert resistance group known as Mayday.

In the dystopian vision of The Handmaid’s Tale, the US has been ravaged by infertility and environmental disasters, giving rise to a totalitarian government that enslaves women as birthing surrogates.

The tale follows Offred (played by Elizabeth Moss), one of the few remaining fertile women enslaved in the caste of handmaids, as she strives to find her daughter who was violently taken from her.

Moss, who starred as Peggy Olson in Matthew Weiner’s hit series Mad Men, has described Offred as a “sexual slave” who is left with nothing.

“I play a breeder, a host, a woman for whom all of her rights, and all of her family and friends, have been taken away,” she told the Guardian.

Offred serves in the household of Commander Fred Waterford, played by BAFTA nominee Joseph Fiennes.

Appearing last week on ITV’s Lorraine, Fiennes confirmed he will reprise his role in the second season.

His on-screen wife Serena Joy Waterford is played by actress Yvonne Strahovski who fans recognised from her roles on Chuck and Dexter.

Orange is the New Black fans will also recognise two familiar faces – Samira Wiley as handmaid Moira Madeline Brewer as handmaid Ofwarren.

Several recurring cast members also play roles on the series, including Amanda Brugel, Ever Carradine, Kristen Gutoskie and Tattiawna Jones.
