The Generation Game: Mel and Sue hosted revival SLAMMED by viewers ‘Utterly abysmal’

The programme was fronted by former Great British Bake Off presenters Mel and Sue for the first time tonight on BBC One.

Family members competed in teams of two to make it through to the final and win prizes, just like the original contest.

The show saw the contestants try to replicate skills demonstrated by professionals to win rounds, which included sausage making and plate spinning.

However, those watching at home weren’t happy with the comeback, and took to Twitter to comment.

One vented: “They must know just HOW bad this is so why did they let it happen? WHY???!!! #WRONG #GenerationGame #MakeItStop.”

“@MelGiedroycTV @sueperkins @BBC maybe leave #generationgame in the past,” another advised.

While a third added: “I really wanted to like it… But it was simply awful.. #GenerationGame.”

Others were quick to compare the duo to the late former hosts Bruce Forsyth and Larry Grayson, with some saying they would be “turning in their graves”.

One viewer tweeted: “#GenerationGame total rubbish! The presenters are trying very hard to win the ratings on this one but sadly you will never replace Brucie and Larry. I expect this series to have a short life span.”

“Tell me The Generation game is an April fool joke played by the BBC. Utterly abysmal. Brucie will be spinning in his grave. #GenerationGame,” posted another.

A third added: “What an earth have they done to the Generation Game. That pair of annoying t**ts have totally ruined it. Larry must be turning in his grave. #GenerationGame.”

However, it wasn’t all bad reviews as plenty of fans posted praise to the social network.

One complimented: “#GenerationGame I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, I’m a Larry and Bruce man BUT in the end I actually did , a lot ! Well done girls.!”

“#generationgame Many congratulations ladies. Wonderful piece of entertainment,” another added.

“Loved #GenerationGame tonight. Me and the wife laughing out loud. Bring back more old school gameshows,” a third declared.

The show was famously hosted by Sir Bruce back when it began on British television in 1971, and he continued in the role until 1977.

Larry Grayson then fronted the programme from 1978 to 1981.

Sir Bruce came back to present the second revival from 1990 until 1994, before Jim Davison then took up the mantle for seven series from 1995 to 2002.

The current series will be back with just one more instalment, set to air next week, after the BBC announced earlier this year that they had cut the episode order down from four to two.

The Generation Game continues Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
