The quizzer, known at The Sinnerman on the ITV gameshow, caused controversy by appearing to imply that the programme’s viewers were stupid.
Paul, 47, blasted: “Believe me, the large part of the Chase fan base is not very clever.
“And yet The Chase is a clever show,” he added, noting that the questions spanned a range of subjects, from the French Revolution and 17th century philosophers to literature and art.
The chaser lashed out at fans on social media, telling The Mirror: “You only had to read The Chase timeline on Twitter every day to realise.”
The brainy star went on to criticise viewers on social media, saying: “Anyone with any physical imperfections are pilloried, people constantly say that we have got the answers wrong or facts wrong and it’s like, ‘No, you just didn’t listen to the question properly.'”
Paul recently claimed that show bosses might have edited out references to his sexuality after viewers were shocked by his revelation that he was gay in a recent episode.
“I have been on the show six years and I have made lots of references to being gay,” he told guyslikeu.com. “But they mysteriously never made the edit.
He added that the show may have wanted to portray his on-screen persona a specific way, saying: “We have carefully stage managed personas on the show. Maybe they didn’t want it to become a thing.
“You know, when we do those intros at the start of the show, ‘Who is the chaser today?’,” Paul continued. “Maybe they didn’t want it to be, ‘Is it going to be the Sinnerman, and he likes c**k!'”
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
