Back in February is looked like Tesla could be rocked by the introduction of the Faraday Future FF91, however since then FF seemed to have gone off the radar and experienced numerous problems along the way.
Now, Tesla Model S could have a new potential rival from California startup Lucid Motors.
Lucid Motors recently released a video of their prototype electric car clocking in a 235 mph top speed in a test where the vehicles limiter was removed.
Back in April it managed to reach a top speed of 217mph with the speed limiter fitted – Tesla’s top speed is limited to 155mph.
Alongside this gargantuan top speed its 0-62mph time of 2.5 seconds matches the top spec Tesla Model S P100D in Ludicrous Mode.
Lucid Motors ‘Air’ Prototype Launch Edition was the car used in the test and is claimed to have a twin-motor power system which generates around 1,000bhp.
Samsung has developed the battery for the car which has a claimed range of around 400 miles which also leaves the Model S in the dust.
Lucid Motors has already opened order books for the Air Launch Edition with prices starting at $ 160,000 (£125,000).
Tesla shouldn’t be too worried just yet however as the California based car firm does not have enough money to build their Arizona based factory to build the Air.
If however it does produce this funding, it could be the first true rival to Tesla.
Following the introduction of the top spec model an entry level car is expected to go on sale in the US next year priced nearer to $ 52,500 (£41,000).
This car is expected to boast 400bhp and a range of 240 miles which places it between the Model 3 and Model S terms of price and performance.
David Salguero, Lucid spokesman, said: “What it does represent, however, is further proof that the Lucid Air is a vehicle without compromise, one that offers incredible performance and dynamics, yet still offers remarkable space and comfort for a sublime luxury experience.
“I can tell you that Lucid’s Series D fundraising continues and that it is going very well but I can’t give any details beyond that.”
