The Streatham MP appeared on the ITV show alongside Tory rival Iain Duncan Smith, where he scrutinised Theresa May’s controversial move to pull out of ITV and the BBC’s televised debates for the snap general election she announced earlier this week.
However, following news that the Conservative Party have extended their historic lead over Labour by 24 points, Susanna Reid teased the headlines won’t make “great reading for Jeremy Corbyn”.
“This will be tough for Labour as it’s an usual election process,” admitted Umunna, 38. “Firstly there’s leaving the European Union, second thing is looking out for public services; the NHS is in crisis and is being starved of funds, and the economy has got to change.
“We’re the fifth most wealthiest country in the world.”
Reid was unconvinced as she dug out Corbyn’s bold promises going into the the June 8 vote, which included creating “a million good quality jobs”.
“How will you generate ‘decent’ jobs for all?” she said. “How do you promise that? Are you going to promise zero unemployment? That’s a fantasy land – it’s impossible.”
Umunna fired back: “I’m not gong to deny it, we’ve got a low rate of unemployment, but there 700,000 vacancies.”
Reid interrupted: “So you’re going to force people to take those jobs?”
Umunna also clashed with Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith, who suggested that no one will be watching the upcoming head-to-head debates if Theresa May doesn’t stand.
“I think they’re a big yawn,” he moaned.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
