The two played Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa in the original trilogy, when it was revealed that they were in fact related.
Speaking on US chat show The View yesterday, Hamill revealed how Fisher got protective of her royal status when she heard the news.
Speaking of her gutsy, groundbreaking character, he said: “I thought this is effortless feminism because it’s not hitting it over the head, because she’s no damsel in distress – and as you know, that was Carrie.
“She was funny and she loved being the only woman on set, she loved being called Princess Leia.”
He added: “I used to get on her, ‘you are royalty – you’re Hollywood royalty. Your mom was a movie star your dad was a recording star.’
“I’m strictly middle class, I was the middle of 7, my dad was in the navy.”
Of the moment the twist was revealed, Hamill went on: “So I remember too when they took us aside and said, ‘ok nobody knows but in this episode you’re going to be revealed as brother and sister.
“And we were sort of shocked – and I thought for a minute, ‘wait, if Luke is Leia’s brother – does that make me royalty? And she went, [snapping] ‘NO!’
“I said, ‘all right! I was just asking!’ So possessive of all that. She was adamant – ‘no way!’”
Hamill and Fisher both starred in the recent Star Wars entry Episode 8: The Last Jedi – but following her sad death at the end of 2016, Fisher will not appear in Episode 9.
Rian Johnson, who directed TLJ, said of Fisher’s final performance: “She passed away around New Year.
“We got back after the holiday break and went in the edit room and looked through all of her scenes and had a conversation with [Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy] and the question briefly arose, ‘Do we try and do something? Do we try and manufacture an ending for the character or something?’
“I felt strongly and we decided pretty quickly no, we’re gonna let this performance stand.”
Speaking to Bullseye, he added: “And also because her performance, I thought, was beautiful and I thought that if we did that, we’d have to lose some element of it.
“Whether it was the scene with Luke or the scene at the end with her and Daisy [Ridley] in the Falcon. I want, especially now, I want to leave the movie with Carrie Fisher having told me the words of hope at the end of this movie. I wanted the world to have this performance of hers.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK on April 9.
