The 2020 Anthology spin-off is yet to be revealed, but fans are hopeful that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy will make the announcement at this year’s D23.
A recent source at the studio claimed that the producer has every intention of making an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off starring Ewan McGregor, set after 2005’s Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope – when Obi-Wan was in exile.
Now Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh reckons it’s likely Liam Neeson will reprise his role as Qui-Gon Jinn, but this time as a Force ghost.
In his new YouTube video Zeroh brings up a rumour from more than a year ago that Disney have been seeking Liam Neeson’s return as Qui-Gon Jinn.
He then explained how reintroducing the character as a Force ghost would fit perfectly in a solo movie set after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Zeroh said: “When you think about Qui-Gon Jinn and an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film [set] after Revenge of the Sith, I honestly think the best way to go about doing this would be to bring him back as a Force ghost on Tatooine, where he appears in front of Obi-Wan.
“Now we do know that at the very end of Revenge of the Sith, Yoda offered his training to Obi-Wan on how he could commune with him.
“I think the whole Obi-Wan Kenobi film, at least in the first act, could have to do with his training of how to commune with a Force ghost, specifically here…with Qui-Gon Jinn.”
He added: “I think it would be such a great connection, because when we look at the end of Revenge of the Sith [there’s] that one specific sequence when Yoda says, ‘Teach you to commune with him, I will.’”
The scene obviously refers to Qui-Gon Jinn’s Force ghost, who Obi-Wan also met in The Clone Wars TV series.
The idea certainly fits, but for now fans will just have to wait and see if Disney and Lucasfilm turn it into a reality.
