WARNING SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI AHEAD
In the run up to Star Wars The Last Jedi, speculation was rife as to whether or not the Force ghosts of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Yoda would return.
The dead Jedi were last seen together at the conclusion of Return of the Jedi, before Obi-Wan and Yoda’s voices could be heard in Rey’s vision during The Force Awakens.
With the release of The Last Jedi this week, Star Wars fans were treated to a special scene of Luke with Yoda’s Force ghost, by the original Jedi Temple on Ahch-To.
But with Episode IX to go, a film that will reference the previous two trilogies and tie up the Skywalker saga, could we get more than just Yoda?
The most likely Force ghost to appear in Episode IX is of course Luke’s, after his sudden death at the end of The Last Jedi.
We know he’s become one with the Force, since the Jedi Master’s body disappeared, simply leaving his cloak behind like Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope.
Mark Hamill has also revealed he hopes to return in Star Wars 9, after his last line to Kylo Ren.
And since Episode IX is alleged to unite all three trilogies, an obvious scene – perhaps right at the end – would be a group of Force ghosts.
Just imagine Luke’s Force ghost joining Yoda with Ewan McGregor’s aged Obi-Wan, Hayden Christensen’s Anakin and even Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn. Talk about the ultimate fan service!
Of course the best use of an Anakin Force ghost would be an encounter with Kylo Ren, who is already very complex and conflicted just like his grandfather was.
Perhaps it could be this meeting that finally brings Kylo Ren to the light, or at the very least an acceptance of a balance in the Force?
Star Wars Episode IX will be released in UK cinemas on December 20, 2019.
