Sonic Mania – Sega smash hit suffers chart blow, but there’s a catch

Sonic Mania is out now on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One – and has been a huge hit with critics and fans alike.

Sonic’s long-awaited return to 2D has been extremely well received, with the blue hedgehog’s return to his roots getting rave reviews.

On Metacritic, Sonic Mania has a rating of 88 per cent on Nintendo Switch, 86 per cent on PS4 and 85 per cent on Xbox One.

Sonic Mania was launched last Tuesday, and since then the latest UK charts have been released.

However, Sonic Mania does NOT feature on it – but there’s a very good reason for it.

The number one game in the UK, for the seventh week in a row, is another retro revival – Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy.

But Sonic Mania does not feature in the charts, as it’s only been released digitally.

So it does not count towards the boxed games charts.

However, Sega told GI.Biz that if the charts did encompass digital sales then it would have been number one by “quite some margin”.

But seeing as Sonic Mania was only launched in digital stores, it’s missing entirely from the GfK/UKIE Top 40.

Fans are still hoping that a physical release of Sonic Mania is on the cards.

Earlier this month GameStop Italy listed a physical version of Sonic Mania for the Nintendo Switch.

The listing has since been taken down, but it hasn’t stopped fans hoping that one day a physical version of Sonic Mania will be released.

A Collector’s Edition of Sonic Mania has been released for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One – but includes a download code for the game instead.
