SNES Classic Mini review round-up: Pint-sized console is a huge success

Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Edition fans just have a few days to wait until the big release date later this week.

The SNES Classic Mini launches on Friday, and it’ll let gamers relive the glory days of 16-Bit gaming in glorious HD.

The pint-sized console comes bundled with 21 classic games, including a number that weren’t released in the UK.

These classic games include Earthbound, Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy III (which is actually Final Fantasy 6).

The SNES Classic Mini also comes with the never before released Star Fox 2.

Ahead of the big SNES Classic Mini release date, tonnes of reviews have gone live today.

And the overwhelming verdict is the pint-sized console is a huge success.

Express.co.uk have rounded up some of the SNES Classic Mini reviews to give you a broad idea of what to expect from the miniature console.

SNES Classic Mini review – Techadvisor – 5/5:  “The SNES Classic Mini improves on the NES edition with longer controller cables and some handy new features such as rewind.

“Whether the games line-up suits your taste, we don’t know but we think you’re getting excellent value for money here – 21 games including the unreleased Star Fox 2, two controllers and hours of nostalgic enjoyment.

“Let’s face it, this is a must for any Nintendo fan.”

SNES Classic Mini review – Kotaku: “The SNES Classic does everything it promises to do.

“It runs some great games and helpfully makes them a little easier to play with those save states and rewind function.

“The lack of a home button on the controller is frustrating, and you’ll probably want to snag a longer HDMI cable if you don’t want to have to get up to swap games, but this is a great piece of hardware.

“As both a collector’s item and a regular addition to anyone’s gaming rotation, it is superb.”

SNES Classic Mini review – IGN – 8.5: “It remains an absolute joy to play the vast majority of this selection of the SNES Classic’s excellent library, whether for the first or fiftieth time.

“I’ve had a blast with it and intend to continue revisiting beloved hallmarks like Super Mario World while also diving into classics I missed, like Earthbound.

“I wish Nintendo had taken more lessons from the faults of last year’s NES Classic and added more modern conveniences to the hardware.

“Aside from the slightly increased but still limiting controller cord length, few of the NES Classic’s issues were addressed.

“But the tiny, delightfully detailed console makes it quick and easy to have an authentic ‘90s Nintendo experience with some of the greatest games of that era.”

SNES Classic Mini review – Nintendo Life: “While the SNES Classic doesn’t come with an (official) means of expanding its library and the 21 games included won’t be to everyone’s tastes, for such a modest asking price it’s hard to really fault this second micro-console release from Nintendo.

“The SNES is home to some undeniably incredible video games, a great many of which are included here. Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy III and Super Metroid are rightly considered to be the zenith of their respective genres – even after all these years – and being able to play them alongside other AAA SNES games on a single console which costs only slightly more than your typical modern video game represents remarkable value for money, and that’s before you take into account the fact that Nintendo has kindly included a second controller with the machine this time around.”

SNES Classic Mini review – GameSpot: “We’re aware that there are so many ways to play these games and we’ve had several versions of them through the years.

“But to have this lineup of iconic games in one place, in an easy, accessible, and convenient fashion makes the SNES Classic worth seeking out. If Nintendo’s looking to capitalize on 16-bit nostalgia, I’d say it did a damn fine job.”

SNES Classic Mini review – CNET – 8.5: “The SNES Classic is a nearly perfect retro console that’s a slam-dunk recommendation for everyone — provided you can find one.”
