Silver is the new black! Sales of metallic party wear soaring for Christmas

They have been inspired by celebrities who have embraced the trend since it first emerged on the catwalk for shows by Chanel, Balmain and Christian Dior early this year.

Kendall Jenner kicked off the look for Chanel at Paris fashion week in January and in February Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stunned in silver at the Vanity Fair Oscar party.

Since then, silver has been the only look to be seen on the red carpet with Joanne Froggatt wearing it for the BFI Luminous Fundraising Gala at London’s Guildhall in October and Cara Delevingne choosing it at multiple premieres around the world for her film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

In the last week Rita Ora wore a skin-tight pewter gown to The Fashion Awards 2017 at the Royal Albert Hall, Countdown’s Rachel Riley was draped in a silver dress that plunged to the waist and was slashed to the hip at the World Aids Day Charity Gala in London and Rosie again choosing it when she shimmered in snowy silver at a launch for upmarket beauty retailer Caudalie in New York.

Online fashion retailer SimplyBe has seen demand for silver dresses and accessories double in the last six months while sales of the traditional evening wear staple – the trusty LBD or Little Black Dress – have remained stable.

The company has seen its highest-ever number of searches for silver coloured clothing of all kinds in the last two months as shoppers planned their festive outfits.

SimplyBe said their most popular pair of boots is a silver calf length pair.

Priced at £50, they have shown a 164 per cent increase in sales over the past month, outselling the black version of the same boots by 188 per cent.

Jenni Bamford for Simply Be said: “It’s great to see that women are adding so much shimmer and glitz to their wardrobes this party season and are not shy to embrace the metallic trend.

“Our catwalk-inspired AW17 collection includes all-over silver glitter dresses, a sequin biker jacket, metallic t-shirts and a range of silver shoes and accessories, so those who prefer not to shimmer from top to toe can get on-board with a nod to the trend whilst still making a statement.

Silver is no longer reserved for Saturday night, with trend-led pieces that can take you from office to bar.”
