How many episodes are there of S-Town?
S-Town tells the story of John B McLemore, a horologist and southern eccentric from Woodstock, Alamaba.
John wrote into the team behind Serial and This American Life asking them to investigate an alleged murder in his hometown, which he calls “S***town”.
Over seven episodes Brian Reed investigates the supposed killing and its subsequent cover-up.
But when a different body turns up, a new story emerges about a bitter feud and a hunt for hidden gold.
All seven episodes were released at once, which executive producer Julie Snyder says allows listeners to delve into the story at their own pace.
“The weekly model, it does put a lot of pressure on plot. That’s not where our interest is right now,” she told Vanity Fair.
“We had always talked about it as being more like a novel than a film or a TV show.
“You don’t read a novel that way, where you have it episodically delivered. It’s more the thing that’s by your bedside stand, and maybe you bring it with you and you’re reading voraciously, or taking your time more and living in this world for a week and half.”
Most fans have already binge-listened to the series, which reached 10 million downloads just four days after its release.
Serial, which released new episodes weekly when it launched in 2014, took seven weeks to hit the same milestone.
Will S-Town return for season 2?
S-Town was announced along with two as-yet-unnamed projects from Serial Productions, a new banner from the This American Life family.
“We’re harnessing the incredible reporting and editing talent of This American Life and Serial and throwing it toward the creation of new shows,” Snyder said in a statement.
One of the two new podcasts is thought to be Serial season three, which Snyder has confirmed that she and Sarah Koenig are “working hard” on.
So far producers have not said whether the other project will be a second instalment of S-Town or something completely new.
Brian, Julie and the team spent three years working on S-Town, which ties up most of the loose ends of John B McLemore’s story.
It is possible that a second season could follow Serial’s lead, which returned after its record-breaking first run with an entirely new case.
