During an action-packed episode, Carbide made by West Midlands competitors Dave Moulds and Sam Smith took on Crackers ’N’ Smash, made by North Yorkshire team Alex Botwright, Ian Botwright, David Weston and Keith Brown.
As soon as they entered the arena, heavyweight Carbide proved to be the dominant machine against two-part clusterbot Crackers ’N’ Smash.
In a nail-biting moment, Crackers ’N’ Smash looked as if it had been completely destroyed when it was sensationally thrown up into the air.
However, it was the landing that caused the most damage as the robot was flung into the side of the arena, smashing the glass separating the robots from the audience.
For safety reasons, the battle had to be temporarily suspended while the arena was fixed.
However, just moments later, presenter Angela Scanlon said: “The match will now not be continuing as Crackers ’N’ Smash have some news.”
The team decided to formally forfeit the match to Carbide instead of risking further damage to their already-wounded robot.
Viewers at home were outraged by the tactical decision to withdraw, arguing it went against the spirit of the show.
One fan scolded: “#RobotWars Crackers & Smash should be renamed Gutless & Cowardly.”
“Playing tactics is clever in real life, but it’s properly boring in Robot Wars. Not a fan of Crackers and Smash. #RobotWars,” another complained.
While a third tweeted: “Don’t much like Crackers and Smash, doesn’t really feel in the spirit of the thing #RobotWars.”
Robot Wars continues next Sunday at 7pm on BBC Two.
