The brooding teen icon revealed the hilarious reason in a recent interview. It would almost be ironic, if the resolutely po-faced movies had been capable of the slightest hint of irony.
Pattinson, or the man formerly known as R-Patz, played the vampire Edward Cullen, a creature with a distinct aversion to sunlight and and any sense of levity.
The actor US radio host Howard Stern that he had passionately disagreed with the makers of the film over their vision of how Edward would behave.
Incredibly, Pattinson was warned he was about to lose the role because he was doing too much of this…
The British star said: “Now, Twilight‘s known to be this very emo thing. That’s what teenage relationships are like. But everyone wanted them happy and having fun. I wanted it brooding.
“I remember the producers giving me a copy of the book, and every single instance where my character smiled, they’d highlighted. I got a different colour highlighter and highlighted all the times he frowned!”
It’s all very Marlon Brando, but the producers were not impressed.
Pattinson recalled that he was warned by his agents that he needed to immediately change the way he was playing the role, or else.
He said: “They were like, ‘You have to do the opposite of what you’re doing now, or you’re going to get fired, today.’
“I came back after lunch and I was like [adopts very cheerful voice]: “Hiiiii! I wanna keep my job!’
“I was probably going a little too miserable, so some kind of compromise was OK.”
