Riverdale spin-off: Creator reveals 'very different' sister-show as he teases season 3

Screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasaz revealed television network CW was working on another Riverdale spin-off at the TCA summer press tour on Monday.

During the panel discussion, Roberto said writers and producers were in the process of creating a ”very different” show to the hugely successful teen drama.

Speaking about another spin-off, he teased: “We’re still early on in the process and it will be very different from Riverdale.”

However, he mentioned the show would be “in the development cycle”, before discussing the crossover between Riverdale and sister-show The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Roberto said The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which will be released on Netflix at the end of October, will have no Riverdale cameos.

Commenting on the show, he said: “I think right now we’re just making sure that the shows have their own identities and own set of rule.”

Creator Roberto then went on to discuss the third season of Riverdale and did not shy away from revealing secrets.

The new season will include a flashback to when the adults were high school teens in episode four, titled The Midnight Club.

“It’s our take on The Breakfast Club,” Robert said.

“We learn about a really dark secret that the parents have been keeping since they were in high school.”

He continued: “We’ve been teasing this for years, going back to season one. I call this the ‘Lili Reinhart Memorial episode’.

“She’s been wanting to do a flashback episode for years.”

For the episode, all the younger actors will play their parents, therefore KJ Apa (Archie) will play the younger version of Archie’s dad Fred, and Camilla Mendes (Veronica) will play her younger mum Hermione (Marisol Nichols).

As if that was not enough, Roberto also spoke about an epic wedding show, which would air next season.

He said it would be “between an ex-sheriff and ex-major”, hinting that Tom Keller (played by Martin Cummins) and Sierra McCoy (Robin Givens) could tie the knot.

He added: “They seem to be the most stable relationship on Riverdale right now.”

As rumours have been swirling around Veronica moving on from Archie in the new season, Robert decided to chip in on the conversation.

Confirming Veronica will have a new boyfriend, he stated: “It is true that there might be a new love interest for Veronica, and you might see seeds of that in Episode 3.”

But who could this new boyfriend be?

Riverdale season 3 returns to the CW in October and follows on Netflix in the UK shortly after.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on Netflix in October.
