With the return of Riverdale only three months away, fans will be expecting the third season to pick up where the second one left off.
The last time fans of the show saw Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and the gang, the red-haired boy-next-door was facing time behind bars after it appeared he had been framed for murder.
However, Lili Reinhart, who plays the mysterious Betty Cooper, revealed that there will be a time jump between the two seasons, which fans wouldn’t be expecting.
The actress said that the season will begin with Betty, Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Archie and Veronica (Camila Mendes) heading back to Riverdale High for their junior year.
After the events of the previous two seasons, the core four will be thinking about what lies ahead for them and the community of Riverdale.
Sitting on a panel at San Diego’s Comic-Con panel yesterday, Lili explained: “They’ve gone through their summer and are about to go back to school.”
At the end of season two, Lili’s character Betty became the Serpent Queen, after Jughead asked his girlfriend to stand by him as the Serpent King.
Jughead was appointed the gang leaders role after his dad, FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), retired from the Serpents.
Speaking about what’s next for Betty, Lili said: “At the beginning of the season, you’ll see her own that title.”
Fans will be aware that Betty does have a dark side, which had been bubbling under the surface in season one and began to emerge more publicly in season two.
Could it be that her new role will show her darker side further?
Joining Lili on the panel yesterday was Casey Cott, who plays the Sheriff’s son Kevin Keller in the teen drama series.
During the last season, it was revealed that Mayor Sierra McCoy (Robin Givens) had been having a secret affair with Sheriff Tom Keller (Martin Keller) which led to her subsequent resignation.
However, the news didn’t go down too well with Kevin and Sierra’s daughter Josie (Ashleigh Murray).
Speaking to the audience, Casey explained that relationships have had time to develop in the three month time frame, with Sierra and Tom’s relationship having major consequences for Kevin and Josie.
He dished: “I’ve heard a rumour that we might move in together this year.”
But other relationships could have also developed in that time, especially if fans have their say.
Fans of the show had been hoping the chemistry between Betty’s mum Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) and FP Jones, would have flourished last season, but Betty’s dad Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) was putting a stop to anything going any further.
With Hal now behind bars for the Black Hood murders, fans are hoping the relationship between Alice and FP will be rekindled.
Riverdale returns for “Labour Day” on The CW on Wednesday October 10th, with the episode airing on Netflix in the UK the day after.
