Riverdale’s season one finale saw a tense scene in Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe where Fred Andrews (played by Luke Perry) was shot by the sinister killer.
When the Netflix teen mystery picked back up for season two, a rollercoaster commenced that saw Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) become obsessed with finding his father’s shooter.
The Black Hood went on a rampage across the town, leading to two awful murders in the form of Miss Geraldine Grundy (Sarah Habel) and Robert Phillips (Robert Baker).
And as the drama intensified, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) finally snapped on her stalker and she and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) got to the bottom of the serial killer’s identity.
Episode nine Silent Night, Deadly Night saw Sheriff Keller (Martin Cummins) shoot the Black Hood dead.
Betty had already accused the school janitor Joseph Svenson (Cameron McDonald) of being the culprit but he had been ruled out after his tragic backstory was revealed.
Yet when the hood was finally peeled off, the dead man behind the mask was actually Joseph after all.
Many fans were convinced there was another strand to the complicated mystery, and now series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has confirmed it.
Most of the cast and crew appeared at PaleyFest in Los Angeles earlier this week to discuss the remaining episodes of the season.
Roberto admitted that the writing team hadn’t actually been sure who the murderer would be at first, so they gave themselves options.
He said: “When we started, we had three likely suspects, so for the first half of the season, we were always dropping red herrings so we could pick.
“As we moved into the second half, and we get back to the Black Hood for the last few episodes, we always knew it wasn’t Svenson.
“But for the last 10 episodes or so, we’ve had a pretty clear idea and have been writing toward that,” he hinted.
So with the revelation that the real perpetrator is still out there somewhere, the question remains – who is the Black Hood?
The most likely answer is that Betty’s incredibly sinister brother Chic Cooper (Hart Denton) is the figure’s true identity.
What’s more, Betty received a number of personal phone calls from the killer insisting that they were alike in many ways.
Ever since Chic arrived on the scene he has reminded Betty of their “shared darkness”, so is the puzzle solved?
Or is Chic an imposter after all?
