Ripper Street season 5: Viewers horrified by GRUESOME episode: ‘Make it stop!’

The instalment saw Edmund Reid (played by Matthew Macfadyen) and Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) form a morbid plan to smoke serial killer Nathaniel Dove (Jonas Armstrong), brother of assistant commissioner Augustus Dove (Killian Scott), out of hiding.

Jedediah Shine (Joseph Mawle) was on their tail and stopped at nothing to track them down, including the brutal intimidation of whoever he thought might be protecting them.

Losing his daughter’s high opinion of him after the papers portrayed him as a murderous vigilante, Reid faced bigger problems.

Between dentures being used to tear chunks out of dead human bodies, bones being snapped “like a party game”, and Miss Agatha Chudleigh (Ellie Haddington) bludgeoning people to death, viewers didn’t know where to look.

Fans of the show instantly took to social media, squeamish about what they had just witnessed on the show.

One viewer tweeted: “Dark. Very Dark. But still freckling eh-pick! #RipperStreet.”

“@BBC have had misfortune to just watch #RipperStreet – why so much gratuitous violence against women? Women suffer enough in real life,” posted another.

A third said: “Good god #RipperStreet was a bit tense & bloody!!” as another added: “Jeez. I can’t keep up with this. Heavy viewing alright #ripperstreet.”

A fifth tweeted: “Oh that was bad.. oh stop that crunch! Bit of active post mortem physiotherapy going on in #RipperStreet #crunch #snap,” as another said: “We knew Miss Chudleigh was bad news. But we definitely didn’t expect that. #RipperStreet.”

Ripper Street continues next Monday on at 9.30pm.
