The dramatic fourth instalment saw the duo head to Hackney Marshes in search of the murderer after he killed Prudence Sumner (played by Meave Dermody) in gory scenes last week.
Unfortunately, when they arrived they learned that he had fled the scene and was hiding out at his brother Augustus’ (Killian Scott) home along with Jackson’s (Adam Rothenberg) son Connor.
While Jackson and his wife Long Susan (MyAnna Buring) headed to Augustus’ house to free their son and flee London, Edmund (Matthew Macfayden) answered a false signal from his daughter Mathilda (Anna Burnett).
When he was lured into the streets of Whitechapel by her husband and former colleague Samuel Drummond (Matthew Lewis) he came face-to-face with Jedediah Shine (Joseph Mawle).
The pair battled it out on the streets, with Jedediah almost killing Edmund by stamping on his head.
But after a change of heart he left the scene and headed to a nearby opium den to end his life.
Fans will know that Jedediah has been battling with the affects of violent past and tonight he sought to stop his suffering.
He could be seen injecting himself with morphine before passing out on a bed, with Augustus later arriving to find him dead.
Viewers took to Twitter to praise actor Joseph for his portrayal of the brutal police officer and his unexpected death.
One shared: “You knew it was coming but still, Shine dying was somehow unexpected in how he did it… #RipperStreet.”
While another added: “#ripperstreet No more Jebidiah Shine. Brilliant acting, you actually felt sorry for him.”
“Epic performance from Joseph Mawle as Jedediah Shine, viciously heartbreaking episode, once more. #RipperStreet,” a third wrote.
Someone else continued: “Shine is dead! Can’t believe it #RipperStreet.”
Ripper Street continues Monday on BBC Two at 9pm.
