Cycling UK spokesman Duncan Dollimore had no idea what he was in for when he appeared on the ITV show following the arrest of Charlie Alliston, who killed a mother-of-two while recklessly riding his bike.
While many questions surround the horrific tragedy, Madeley and his Good Morning Britain co-host Kate Garraway needed to know why cyclists haven’t been made more accountable.
“One of the problems with this discussion is that it makes it a cycle and motorist issue,” Dollimore explained. “The reality is there are irresponsible people on the road.”
Garraway chipped in: “I did make that point. I’m sorry, if you just let me interrupt, but I did make that point and I really don’t want this to be a motorist versus cyclist issue because many of us, like myself, do both.

God, stop playing games
“But with a driver there is accountability: There’s registration, there’s tax – all sorts of ways where we can track people down.”
After Dollimore began to reply, Madeley interrupted: “Sir, you’re here to answer the questions and you’re not. We’re asking the questions – not on our behalf but on behalf of the viewers so could you respect them? We didn’t ask you about policing on the road, we asked you…”
Again, as Dollimore scrambled to answer, Madeley continued: “Sir would you please let us ask questions and would you please answer them? Would you please answer the questions and not change the subject? We know that is what you are doing. You’re just talking over us and you won’t answer the questions.”
“You asked me about accountability,” sighed Dollimore.
Richard accused Duncan Dollimore of ‘playing games’
But Madeley absolutely lost it and snapped: “Sir, would you please answer questions? We ask the questions, you answer them. Would you please answer the questions and not change the subject, which is what you’re doing – you’re just talking over us.”
Dollimore hit back: “I’m answering the question you’re asking me to answer.”
“God, stop playing games,” Madeley moaned. “The question is really simple. Would you listen to the question? Why aren’t cyclists insured?”
Finally getting his chance to speak, Dollimore went on: “I’ll answer that question. There are 25,0000 people in this country with bikes, that includes something like 70 per cent of people between five and 12. The logistics of a system requiring children to have insurance would be completely unworkable.
Richard and Duncan clashed over cycling insurance
“Bikes change hands more regularly than cars so you have an issue with bikes because they’re not as valuable as a car. If you required children as young as six, seven or eight to have insurance, many people would be discouraged from cycling.”
But that wasn’t enough for Madeley, who continued: “I have to say your answer to cyclists not being insured seems to me close to suspicious because you’re basically not accepting the point that adult cyclists should carry insurance; of course they should if they’re using the road.
“You’re just saying its too complicated because kids use bikes.”
Duncan didn’t know what he was in for on GMB
Viewers were stunned by the clash, with one posting: ”Richard Madeley, you were so rude to the guy about cycling! Why not have him in the studio, instead of out on a busy main road?” which was followed by: “#gmb Richard Madeley ranting about the cycling bloke talking over him talking over the cycling bloke, his co-presenter had a look like ‘wtf?’”
Although, another disagreed and backed Madeley, enthusing: “Great stuff from @richardm56 on @GMB today! What a total breath of fresh air! The interview on the cycling story…!!”
A second teased: “I’m a cyclist. But @richardm56 just destroyed @WeAreCyclingUK on @GMB. Duncan – you give cycling a bad name.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
