But topping the list of pet hates as far as the fairer sex is concerned is men leaving their dirty clothes strewn across the floor.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, watching television for hours on end and failing to tidy up dirty plates and glasses also feature as top household gripes. 

The findings lift the lid on modern day Britain in a survey by sofa firm ScS which is offering £1,500 for a picture that best encapsulates unique laziness.

The study also showed two thirds of women regularly clean the bathroom compared to just a quarter of men.

Almost three quarters of women said they took care of the laundry compared to a lowly fifth of men. 

The most evenly shared task is paying bills.

According to their partners the three things men are most guilty of neglecting around the house are: Leaving dirty clothes on the floor, slouching in front of the TV and leaving a trail of dirty plates and glasses around the house.

Just one in five men take charge of vacuuming, one in six take charge of the ironing and only one in 10 regularly make the bed.

More than a third of those quizzed wished their partner would do more cleaning or washing up the same number that said their other half should cook meals from scratch more often.

A quarter said they wanted their partner to do more exercise because they are too lazy. 

A third of over-65s think their partner can be lazy compared to three quarters of those aged between 25 and 34.
