The near future. Natural resources are depleting and people are spending most of their lives in a virtual reality version of the internet called the Oasis.
Based on Ernest Cline’s hit novel, the love letter to 1980s pop culture is getting a film adaptation directed by none other than Spielberg who is surely the perfect choice.
The story follows Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), an orphan living in 2045 Ohio in a stack of caravans.
When the creator of the Oasis, James Halliday (Mark Rylance) dies, he leaves a quest for his half trillion dollar fortune and ownership of the entire VR world.
Watts sets off as his avatar Parzival in search of three keys which will lead him to Halliday’s Easter Egg.
The only probably is its hidden somewhere in the 10,000 planet-spanning Oasis, with puzzles only the biggest pop culture geeks will be able to handle.
Our hero will also go up against Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelssohn), who heads up IOI, a powerful company that hires people called Gunters to search for the Easter Egg full time.
The new trailer features all kinds of major and more obscure references to movies, including Watts’ Back to the Future DeLorean hybrid, which includes Knightrider’s flashing red lights.
He said: “I would love to do Doc again, no question. It’s tough to come up with an idea that contains the excitement of the original three.
“So it would be a real challenge for the writers to come up with an original Back to the Future story that has the same passion and intensity and excitement as the other three. But it could be done, you never know.”
Ready Player One will be released in UK cinemas on March 30, 2018.
