The news comes as PS4 system update 5.05 has gone live for PlayStation 4 owners.

The brand new firmware update weighs in at just 375MB and can be downloaded right now.

Unfortunately, system update 5.05 doesn’t seem to do a great deal, other than improve system performance. That’s according to the Sony PlayStation 4 patch notes.

It is, however, a mandatory update, so you will need to download and install it if you want to access features like online multiplayer.

It’s possible that the 5.05 patch will also lay the foundations for something much bigger.

In fact, Sony is currently recruiting beta testers for a mysterious new update.

Sony’s upcoming 5.50 patch looks set to introduce new features to the PlayStation system.

Beta testers for last October’s software update got early access to features like Family on PlayStation Network, friend list management, message improvements and much more.

And it appears more changes are on the way in the PS4 5.50 beta, with Sony confirming: “We’ll be back soon with an update on the features you can expect in the beta.

“And thanks to everyone who helped out in the previous beta trial – your feedback is always valued and we hope to see you online again for this one.”
