Princess Diana’s close connection to the Queen Mother – did this influence the wedding?

Princess Diana married Prince Charles in 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The wedding day was watched by millions all across Britain who welcomed Lady Diana Spencer into the Royal Family.

However, close family connections between the Spencers and the Royal Family cause some to wonder if the relationship had been a set up.

Did the Queen Mother and Diana’s grandmother put Prince Charles and Diana together.

Princess Diana’s grandmother was Ruth Roche, Baroness Fermoy.

Born Ruth Sylvia Gill in 1908, the British woman had a very royal job.

She was one of the Queen Mother’s ladies in waiting, a very coveted position.

Although Ruth hoped to be a pianist her dreams were dashed when she married, and she only played publicly occasionally after she wed.

Ruth was appointed to Extra Woman of the Bedchamber in 1956, and then became Woman of the Bedchamber.

Many have assumed that Ruth played a part in setting her granddaughter up with Prince Charles, 69, however, in her lifetime she denied it.

She is reported to have said: “You can say that if you like – but it simply wouldn’t be true”.

Ruth had three children, two daughters and one son.

They are Mary Cynthia Roche, Frances Shand Kydd, and Edmund Roche, 5th Baron Fermoy.

Frances Shand Kydd is the mother of Princess Diana, who married her partner John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, on 1954.

However, the couple went onto divorce in in 1967. Frances went onto marry Peter Shand Kydd. They also split in June 1987.

Princess Diana developed a trick along with a stylist to hide her chest when she stepped out of cars.

According to Anya Hindmarch, Princess Diana created the “cleavage bag”.

The designer often worked with the royal and said the invention made the two giggle.

Harper’s Bazaar report Anya Hindmarch, 50, said: “We used to laugh when we designed what she called her ‘cleavage bags,’ little satin clutches which she would cover her cleavage with when she stepped out of cars.”
