After Jodie Whittaker made history yesterday, becoming the first female regeneration to take on the role, Piers set to debating whether the character can physically be a woman.
The 56-year-old presenter started by asking Richard Arnold and Doctor Who expert, Matthew Sweet, whether Daleks can be “gender-fluid”.
Matthew added that the Doctor’s (currently played by Peter Capaldi) greatest alien enemy do appear to be genderless in their metal form, noting that they are “blobs of jelly”.
“They’re fluid in all sorts of ways. They had a gender many years ago, but now they’re blobs of organic matter,” the TV critic added.
Clearly unwilling to miss the chance for a swipe at his rival, Piers joked: “Well they really are like Lord Sugar then.”
Eager to move on, Richard Arnold added that fans of the BBC’s hit sci-fi show are divided over the appointment.
Commenting frankly, the entertainment editor suggested this was “a much needed shot in the arm for a declining show”.
Jodie, 35, was announced yesterday after Roger Federer stormed to victory against Marin Cilic at Wimbledon.
Speaking of the role, the Broadchurch star admitted: “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet.
“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everything I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait,” Jodie added.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
