Season five of Outlander is not scheduled to be hitting screens until 2020 now, much to the disappointment of fans the world over. The new series of the time travel drama is filming in Scotland at the moment with leads Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe busy shooting the new episodes. Speculation has been rife about the direction of the plot and where the show will be following the much-loved novels by Diana Gabaldon which serve as the basis for the show.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander season 4
Brianna Fraser (played by Sophie Skelton) went on a huge journey in season four of Outlander after she travelled back in time to be reunited with her father Jamie (Heughan) and mother Claire (Balfe).
Before Brianna made the tough decision, she ended up spurning her on-off boyfriend Roger Mackenzie (Richard Rankin) but that didn’t stop him from pursuing her through the stones and declaring his undying love.
Despite their short-lived reunion, Brianna and Roger soon had a falling out resulting in the historian abandoning her.
To make matters worse, Brianna was raped by criminal Stephen Bonnet (Ed Spellers) after she went to retrieve her mother’s stolen wedding ring.
Following the sexual assault, Brianna ended up pregnant with uncertainty over the identity of the father, causing her further turmoil and heartache.
Throughout the course of season four, Brianna dealt with her trauma before going to forgive Bonnet for the harrowing violation.
However, as the season drew to a quite literally explosive close, Bonnet escaped from incarceration and disappeared off.
Ever since becoming a fugitive, fans have been wondering if Bonnet will be making a comeback to Outlander and how Brianna will deal with his return.
WARNING: This section contains major spoilers from the book series
Season five of Outlander will be taking its cue from books The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes rather than just doing a straight adaption of one novel.
In the books, fans will see Bonnet returning as Jamie seeks to hunt down the rapist.
Both Jamie and Roger will try to find Bonnet in a bid to kill him but in typical Outlander style, there will be a twist.
Without giving too much away, Brianna will encounter Bonnet and the pair will have much to do with each other.
Both characters will learn more about each other as Bonnet inflicts further distress upon Brianna.
She will be thrown into further peril than we could have imagined as Bonnet takes her hostage.
Jamie, Claire and Roger will be trying to save Brianna from Bonnet’s clutches and there will be a tussle to get her back.
Justice will prevail for Brianna who finally avenges her assault and subsequent ordeal of the hands of Bonnet.
However, the producers of the TV show may wish to take a different direction from the books.
So, at this stage we don’t know whether Brianna will kill Bonnet but given the show has been fairly faithful to the source material, it wouldn’t be surprising if this scene finally played out.
Outlander season 5 will be airing on Starz and Amazon Prime in 2020
