Last week’s long-awaited instalment saw Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) finally return to the past, and it wasn’t long before she found her love Jamie (Sam Heughan) in the Edinburgh print shop he now owns.
But in the last few seconds, the red-haired Scot fainted before viewers could see the characters discover if they still feel the same way about each other.
The latest edition – which was a mammoth 75 minutes long – saw the pair struggle to rekindle their connection, as Jamie was initially unconvinced by his wife’s reappearance.
“Why are you here Claire?” He asked with a pained expression. “Is it to be my wife, or just to give me word of my daughter?”
Upset by his scepticism, Claire eventually convinced her husband that she didn’t care who he was now, she simply wanted to be by his side.
But it was revealed that Jamie’s new life has come with its complications, as when a grown-up Fergus (César Domboy) pulled his master aside it was clear that the fan-favourite characters will have to face new obstacles.
Fergus whispered: “What does that mean for…?”
“I know, but I suppose it may not even matter now that Claire’s returned. I’ll have to speak to [lawyer] Ned Gower,” Jamie replied cryptically.
As the pair shared a knowing glance, Claire waited in the background completely unaware of her husband’s other dealings.
While the series’ latest episode focused heavily on the couple’s sensual rediscovery of each other’s bodies, fans also witnessed Jamie in a shady meeting and exchanging money with an as-yet unknown character.
Given the fiery doctor’s history of taking control, will it be long before Claire finds out the truth about Jamie’s other activities? Can the couple weather the new storms of their 18th Century life?
