When the Brit Awards 2018 gave Gorillaz the gong for best British Group Award during the show tonight, lead singer Damon Albarn took the opportunity to give the public some sage advice.
The awkward moment left viewers reeling as he unleashed his unique style of rant against the current state of the United Kingdom.
Taking the microphone while his bandmates hung back, he began: “This country is, believe it or not, quite a small little thing right.
“It’s a lovely place and it’s part of a beautiful world but don’t let it become isolated and don’t let yourselves become cut off.”
As the time for the group to say their thanks on-stage was running out, Damon continued: “Considering our size, we do incredible things in music.
“We’ve got a real spirit, a real soul, so don’t let politics get in the way of all that sh*t ok?”
The ceremony suffered a brief setback then, as Damon’s speech went on so long that the spotlights went off and the rest of the band had their opportunity to speak ripped away from them.
Another band member called out: “Oh, the lights just turned off,” which prompted show organisers to turn them back on.
After the awkward situation finally played out, presenter Jack Whitehall decided to clarify what had just happened.
Tonight the ITV hit music ceremony featured comedian Jack Whitehall in the presenting role, which meant Emma Willis and Dermot O’Leary couldn’t resist calling out the lack of a female.
Calling out organisers for the bold move at the O2 arena tonight, seasoned hosts Emma and Dermot made a point of referencing it during their speech.
“It seems like there’s something lacking this year,” Dermot said.
The pair shared a knowing glance before he continued: “Female co-host?”
Nodding with a smile, Emma repeated: “Female co-host.”
After the awkward situation finally played out, presenter Jack Whitehall decided to clarify what had just happened.
“I think he was talking about Brexit,” he whispered to the camera.
The Brit Awards 2018 is available to stream on the ITV Hub now.
