The critically lauded drama was initially thought to have lost out to La La Land, however the musical’s producers were interrupted during their acceptance speech with the revelation that there had been an error.
Cameras stayed focussed on the stage, as news spread around the La La Land team that they had not been victorious after all.
What wasn’t seen, however, was the Moonlight stars’ reactions – and they’re a thing of wonder.
With Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris among them, they look like they’re struggling to comprehend what’s happening as they make their way up to collect the trophy.

Ali, who had earlier won Supporting Actor, said backstage: “I just didn’t want to go up there and take anything from somebody, you know?
“And that’s very hard to feel joy in a moment like that, because somebody else… just, in front of them.
“But I feel very fortunate for all of us to have walked away with the Best Picture award. It’s pretty remarkable.”
La La Land still had a great night, winning six trophies altogether – including Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for Damian Chazelle.
It had been the favourite to win Best Picture, enjoying huge pre-awards buzz and big box office numbers.
Elsewhere at the Oscars, Viola Davis took Best Supporting Actress and Casey Affleck took Best Actor.
