Close, star of The Wife, was the overwhelming bookies’ favourite to take the Best Actress gong. She currently holds the record for the most ever nominations without a single win at the Oscars, and her work in 2018 drama The Wife was widely believed to have finally given her the iconic trophy. But it was Colman, star of The Favourite, who went home with the silverware – delivering a lovable acceptance speech that quickly went viral.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at an after-party, Close spoke out on her loss.
“I’m feeling really, really good,” she said.
With a smile, she quipped: “I was upset about all the people who bet that I was going to win! All the people in Jersey, sorry!”
Asked about her experience of awards season – which saw her win at the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes – she beamed: “All the love that I have felt… it has moved me.
“It has overwhelmed me. And to me, that’s it.”
Colman gave a nod to Close during her acceptance speech on Sunday night.
“To be in this category, with these extraordinary women, and Glenn Close – you are my idol and this is not how I wanted it to be,” she said. “I love you all.”
Close has now been unsuccessfully nominated three times for Best Supporting Actress, and four times for Best Actress.
Her previous nods came for The World According To Garp (1983), The Big Chill (1984), The Natural (1985), Fatal Attraction (1988), Dangerous Liaisons (1989) and Albert Nobbs (2012).
Amy Adams is hot on her heels: after her loss for Vice at the weekend, she has now been nominated six times without a win – five times in Supporting Actress and once in Best Actress.
Other winners at the Oscars included Green Book for Best Picture, Regina King for Supporting Actress, Mahershala Ali for Actor, and Bohemian Rhapsody – which won four awards, including Rami Malek for Best Actor.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse took Animated Feature, while Black Panther won Marvel Studios its first ever Oscars, as it won three trophies all in all.
