Nintendo beating back the competition with this new Switch retro games release

Fans of old-school gameplay have been pretty well catered on the Nintendo Switch so far.

Having released in 2017, there have been plenty of retro ports launched on the eShop.

There’s also swathes of new indie games being launched on the Switch, some of them taking cues from older titles.

And for fans of the real iconic classic, a big one is set to be launched later in 2018.

According to a report from Impress Game Watch, the original Arcade Archives Punch-Out!! Is being released as a new Nintendo games launch in 2018.

This will be another retro port handled by Hamster, with a release date set for March 30.

The one snag so far is that Punch Out has not been announced for launch in the West yet.

So far we only know that Japan will be getting it as a new eShop release, so fingers crossed something is revealed soon for the UK.

According to the latest reports, Punch-Out!! Will come with several screen options, to mimic the original arcade game.

The 1983 classic used stacked TV monitors, while the Nintendo Switch will boast options for both horizontal and vertical screen setups.

It should be noted that while Punch-Out!! Has not been announced for the UK and US, other Hamster ports have made it to the West.

It was recently revealed that Nintendo are hoping to draw more attention to the eShop’s hidden gems.

In a recent GDC panel, the company announced plans to update the Nintendo Switch eShop.

The aim is to improve how the eShop functions and make it easier to discover new content.

That’s according to Nintendo’s Damon Barker, who said (Gamingbolt): “We have heard the feedback from yourselves, and from fans, loud and clear, about the limitations of the Nintendo eShop.

“I can assure you that steps are being taken over the course of the coming year to improve the functionality in terms of discoverability and visibility, to highlight all of that great content.”

In the meantime, fans can check out the brand new eShop sale.

Kicking off on March 22, the eShop sale features discounts on more than 140 titles.

“The weather is warming up and the action is kicking into gear as Nintendo eShop holds its spring sale, beginning on Thursday 22nd March at 15:00 CET and running until Thursday 5th April at 23:59 local time,” a Nintendo post reads.

“Over 140 titles will be available at discounted prices, across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS family systems and Wii U. Visit Nintendo eShop once the sale goes live on Thursday for full information on the titles included and the discounts on offer.”

Discounts will be available on the likes of ARMS, LA Noire and Skyrim.
