During the latest instalment of the ITV drama, the busy London doctor headed to Lahore where she was supposed to view her brother Kareem’s (played by Navin Chowdhry) remains.
But as with all good thrillers, things didn’t quite go to plan.
When she arrived in the busy city, she was slipped a note through the open window of her car, which read: “1pm: Be in the square or be square.”
Mona (Archie Panjabi) then slipped away from her handlers in Lahore to meet a little boy who led her to her nephew Danny (Viveik Kalra).
As she met with her nephew, two bodyguards who had followed her set up on a neighbouring roof top with a clear shot at Danny.
They were ordered to shoot the young man but instead they hit Mona in the gut, leaving her fate in the family thriller unknown.
The bodyguards are supposed to be the best at their job so why did they shoot the doctor? Was it a mistake or is there a more sinister reason?
Following the tense episode, actress Archie took to Twitter to issue fans of the show with a chilling warning, hinting that her character may not return.
“Thank you all for watching #NextofKin on @itv. Next week same place, same time. As for Mona… you will have to wait and see,” she tweeted to her 33,600 followers.
Archie previously opened up about the drama, which focusses heavily on family ties and radicalisation as her nephew is accused of being involved in a terror plot.
“It shines a light on the subject of radicalisation, and sadly terror attacks are frequently a reality now,” she told Mail Online.
“But it also explores the themes of family, love and loyalty. Mona immediately takes it upon herself to fight for her nephew’s innocence, while also trying to keep the family intact.
“It was fascinating for me to see how, as a woman, she tries to make everybody happy – which of course, is impossible.”
Speaking about Mona’s relationship with Guy (Jack Davenport), she added: “It’s very refreshing to see a mixed marriage that isn’t about culture clash.
“They met at university and have a very solid, loving and caring relationship – although as the series progresses, it’s put under immense strain and the question is whether their marriage is strong enough to deal with those issues.”
Next of Kin continues next Monday on ITV at 9pm.
