NBC Wins 2016-17 TV Season — And Without the Super Bowl or Olympics

The Peacock is proud yet again.

With the 2016-17 TV season about to close, NBC is set to come out on top for the third time in four years, averaging a 2.1 demo rating (in “most current”/DVR-inclusive numbers).

This marks the first time in five years that any network has won the September-to-May TV season without benefit of the Super Bowl or an in-season Olympics (as NBC did with its two most recent wins, and CBS did in Super Bowl-boosted 2013 and 2016).

Fox came in second this TV season with a 1.9 average demo rating, followed by CBS (1.8), ABC (1.6) and The CW (0.7).

Of note for NBC, it also placed first in the Entertainment Programs Only (excluding live news and sports) and Scripted Programs Only rankings — both for the first time since 2003-04 (when Friends and Frasier aired their farewell runs).

Among the Peacock’s feathers this season, it boasted the No. 1 new series and No. 1 broadcast drama (in the Thursday-bound This Is Us), broadcast’s top two primetime series (Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football), and consistent Monday and Tuesday wins fueled by The Voice.

When it comes to total viewers, CBS was “America’s Most Watched Network” for the ninth year in a row with an average audience of 9.65 million, led by broadcast’s No. 1 comedy and scripted series (The Big Bang Theory), the No. 1 new drama/scripted series (Bull) and the No. 1 new comedy (Kevin Can Wait). NBC placed second with 8.1 million, followed by ABC (6.2 mil), Fox (5.8 mil) and The CW (1.8 mil).
